Challenge Me!

My friend Rachel told me about this great idea of letting friends (and friends of friends) set forth challenges for my journey – it will encourage me to possibly see things I might not know about and it will be a small source of needed revenue for me. So here’s the deal – even though I’m not going to necessarily telegraph my travel plans, I can tell you I’m heading west from Orlando to the California coast, then north, then east, then south, with all sorts of magical goodness in between. Got a bar you need me to raise a pint and get a photo-op at? Want me to say hey to one of your old friends? Set forth the challenge, how much you’re willing to pony up for it and if I can (and the particular challenge doesn’t terrify me) I’ll do it! Stumped for ideas? Have a look at the inspiration, provided by adventurer Steve Savage. POST CHALLENGE HERE IN THE COMMENTS SECTION, PLEASE. PS if it’s time sensitive you’re probably SOL ;) .

Come let me buy you a beer again and tell me all about how you are. Of course, this signifies your return or a break point rather than another adventure in your current journey. But, I am a pretty exciting adventure.

I challenge you to find Courtney Taylor in Austin, TX and convince her to go to The Water Tank with you and do at least one shot – Bartender’s Choice. Take a picture and post it to your blog. Upon successful completion of this challenge, I will pay you $50. Good luck!

Courtney Taylor Meetup at the Tank – COMPLETED!!!

My first successful “challenge” – to meet a super cool gal and have the bartender make us a shot of her choosing. Bartender Sarah made us each a Dragon Bomb (ridiculously yummy) and then bought them for us! Thanks for contributing to the Great American Adventure, Sarah! The Tank was a very cool bar, and as Rachel and Courtney both said, it is GREAT for people watching :) I really enjoyed getting to talk with Courtney, my buddy Rachel’s former roommate, and feel like I’ve made a new friend for life! Photos coming up!

While I’m posting challenges: Go to a club in San Fransisco called Bimbo’s 365. It is the most beautiful venue I have ever been to a show in – and they have really interesting performers – I think you’d enjoy the music. Buy me a Brown Dolphina T-Shirt (contact me for a private disclosure of the required size!). I will reimburse you for the cost of the shirt, the shipping, and I’ll pay you $25! Good luck – and enjoy the show.

PS: When I was there (a million years ago…), I drunkenly wandered off from the main stage and found a second stage in the back with a Beatle’s cover band that sucked me in. I hung out for a while and talked to the band while they were on break. It turned out that the drummer actually knew John Washburn!

Hi Katie, I’m not sure if you’re stopping in New Orleans, but if you do and stop at Cafe Du Monde, have a cafe and a beignet then wax poetic about it (minimum three sentences, OR 1 haiku), AND post a photo of your lovely self sitting dans le cafe, it’s worth $30.

    FROM KATIE…
New Orleans Cafe du Monde challenge: FAIL. Sorry, Girl!

Go to S.A. to The Twig and pick out a few very special books. The Twig will mail them to me and will take my payment info over the phone. Tell them about the challenge and post a picture that shows you are at The Twig. Should you decide to accept the mission- it will be worth 100 smackers. And some money, too.

    CHALLENGE COMPLETED!!!

Contact Ann Minner, aka, Miss Ann if you go to Austin. Ask her to let you take a picture with Chick and post the picture and the statement Chick is known for. Worth $50.- and she’s very cool :)

    CHALLENGE NUMBER 3 – COMPLETED!!!

I met Miss Ann and Chick at the Austin Public Library and both were very VERY cool. I don’t really know what I expected Chick to be but I was definitely surprised : )

And your brother says if you go to SA, you have to go to the Alamo. And I say, why not? A pic. and some interesting facts. Spend a little time. If you buy C a t shirt, or something cool, I’ll pay you back pronto. Worth another $50

In Flagstaff, AZ… meet up with our friend Mark Young (he’s on my FB) and check out some live local music. Post a pic. $40

This one won’t be easy: Go to Phoenix, AZ, find Wendy Swanson and convince her to get together with you. She is a stay-at-home mom and she doesn’t have many opportunities to go out and “rage” (as she will undoubtedly call it). Convince her to do so (by whatever means necessary) and you will find yourself grandly entertained – she’s a real hoot. Here’s the kicker – she’s not on facebook, so I haven’t seen her smiling face since I was at her wedding – take multiple pictures throughout the night and post them to the blog, tell her I miss her and post your favorite “Wendyism” along with the pic’s. Upon completion, this will be worth $30 AND my eternal gratitude.

  10. Rachel

Update – Olga has offered to “up the ante” (if you will) on the Phoenix/Wendy challenge and throw in an additional $50 – bringing the total value of this challenge to $80! Good luck.

Congratulations on completing not 1 but 2 challenges today! Good idea with the video and that was the phrase I was hoping for. How do I send you your loot?????

    Dear Little Katie,
I hope your adventure is going very well. Please congratulate our friend SR for his continuing good health. This challenge is to, in a quiet time, listen to “All I Want” by Joni Mitchell and then listen to as much of Led Zep’s first as you need to wash off the sticky, sugary stuff. Best wishes, and that’s worth five small, melancholy units.
