On April 15, 2009, brothers Roberto and Nathaniel Aguilar of the band, Dish, officially released their remarkable full-length record, Ma Raison De Vivre Ton Amour. They also announced that Nathaniel is leaving the group to move back to Maryland.

Everyone deals with loss differently - here’s my way.

Picture an irreverent big brother who’s been there - done that, and surprisingly lived to tell the tales. Drummer Martin Atkins (Public Image Ltd., Ministry, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails and more) knows the music business. Seriously, he KNOWS it. In addition to being an artist in his own right he also owns the Invisible record label, teaches various marketing courses at Columbia College in Chicago and has written the bible for touring bands, Tour Smart (And Break the Band). But if you’re picturing stale data analysis and tired, overused marketing mantras, think again; Atkins is funny, snarky and straight-up about the pros and cons of becoming a “professional” musician.

In this two-parter Martin and Katie Ball discuss topics ranging from the messy (and funny) lessons learned in some of his past bands and also what musicians are doing to sabotage their careers, and why.

Producer Katie Ball visits a child’s lemonade stand in her Orlando neighborhood. After a cool drink and good-hearted conversation with the Edgars family Ball notices that they had deliberately removed and/or covered their McCain campaign signs so as not to risk offending any would-be customers.

This spoken word essay, set against a musical backdrop, reflects on political intolerance within a battleground state and within her own heart.

This is an oldie but a goody. As a producer with a few more years under my belt it takes every bit of strength I have not to rework this entire piece, but it wouldn’t show a fair representation of my progress. And in truth, the locked-in-time quality of this piece still holds up as a testament to an Orlando band that was admired by folks from all walks of life - and for that I’m proud to share it with you.

This is an intimate audio portrait of world-renowned guitarist, Larry Coryell. He speaks candidly of past mistakes made both in his work and in his private life. From then to now: Coryell’s priorities have changed drastically since his immersion in the New York jazz scene of the mid-1960’s. Now as a practicing Buddhist it seems that music has become just a little bit less consuming, while his life is taking on a rich tune of its own.

This piece was created as a submission for the Short Docs Ephemera challenge at the 2008 Third Coast Audio Festival. Producers had specific guidelines: feature length between 2 minutes, 30 second and 3 minutes; reference two of the 5 provided antique books; include the voice of a stranger.

“Six minutes” is a very personal piece - something that was in many ways too close to my heart to tackle at the time. But the Third Coast guidelines provided the structure needed to let me step outside of the subject, if only one very tiny step. - kball
